Coolant Leakage Plastic Pipes

Just wanted to post my recent experience with the dreaded Plastic pipe issue under the supercharger.

I noticed when waiting at some traffic lights i thought i saw a little steam coming from the front of the Car, but at the next lights there was nothing, i was close to home, so I continued driving with no issues.
I went for another drive the day after, a round trip of about 30 miles and the low coolant level warning light came on. again got home and after the engine cooled down i checked the level. It had dropped around 2" so topped it up and took the car for another short drive to see the rate of loss. after a 10 mile drive it had dropped about 1". i could see a little water in the Vee at the front of the engine and the sweet smell of the coolant additive.

As i had researched all the normal issues with the F type, on forums and you tube, i hoped the head gaskets were ok, and it was the Y pipe leaking.
Although my Car is 2019 so it should have been fitted with the new type of pipes.
I booked the car into my local dealer a 20 mile drive and drove it there the next day with no problems.
They removed the supercharger and found that one of the pipes had broken at the seal spigot, not the small Y pipe but the larger longer one..

As the supercharger had been removed i asked them to change the water pump and all the pipes/ hoses in that area to be sure i am not removing it again in a few years time.
I did ask about fitting the aluminum pipes, but as they are a jaguar dealer they said they have to fit genuine Jag Parts.
My only concern is that if i had the new type plastic pipes on the Car then they are not much better than the pipes with the seams?
has anybody else also had the new type fail?

There are genuine JLR parts for Land Rovers which fit. The US forum gave details of them:

LR092992-A lower "Y" pipe
LR090630-A upper pipe

You were lucky the broken upper coolant outlet pipe didn't cause a major coolant leak whilst on your car travels!

The pipes shown in your pics are the newer (modified) type and some other owners have also had issues with them. As you say, they may not be much better than the pipes with the seams? My car has the older type pipes (with seams) and I haven’t had any issues with those particular ones so far, touch wood!

I have had some problems with the aluminium pattern part fitted by a previous owner, I would be wary of these.

The genuine upgraded plastics pipes, may prove the most compatible.

Unless I misunderstood this those part numbers being up plastic parts, not aluminium ones.

Would be interested to hear of any owners who have fitted aluminium parts and if they report any issues.

A very interesting but all to familiar story I am learning about these vehicles. I will write more on my return but have an ongoing nightmare experience with a coolant issue for the last year.

Sorry to see you having issues. I do think thermal stress has something to do with the coolant pipe issue. The cycle of heating/cooling eventually taking its toll.

My 2014 still retains its original pipes with zero issues. However, I’m going to replace everything next month along with, supercharger overhaul, service & MOT. All in the line of preventative maintenance.

I’m sticking with OEM Jaguar plastic parts. Something about the metal one I’m not keen on.

The dealer has given me all the parts he removed / Changed, and for both of my Y pipes they seem to have perished at the spigot where they enter the aluminum block , although only one actually completely failed. the cross pipe is fine, My only issue with the alloy pipes is the fact there is no play like plastic so alignment of all the connection points would need to be good. ( the same on every car )The O rings would allow a very small amount of misalignment and still seal, but not much.

I'd agree and would steer clear of aftermarket all alloy pipes. I cannot see it as a good idea to substitute any pipe designed to flex and move, with a rigid pipe, where vibration, minor misalignment and even expansion and contraction with heating and cooling over time, could fracture it.
