Hi fellow F-Type enthusiasts!

I’m doing the nav map update. I got the notification on the car nav screen saying map update available, so me being obsessive, I have to do the update! It takes aaaages to download! It’s not my internet speed (I get 500 Mbps download speed at least where I live). It’s been downloading for the last 48 hours and is currently on 68% (the “time remaining” is misleading - that is the time remaining to download the current “part” out of 763 “parts”). I am downloading using my MacBook Air (about 8 years old) and a USB memory stick that has plenty of capacity. It might have finished the download by tomorrow morning! Once it is eventually fully downloaded to the memory stick, the map then takes less than 10 minutes to upload to the car when I plug it in. Does it take this much time to download for everyone? I’m wondering if it might be time for me to get a new laptop or maybe try a fast SSD external USB hard drive rather than a memory stick?

The slow download speeds could have many causes. My downloads are way faster than that I only have 300 Mbps. Here are some possibilities:

1. The 8 year old Macbook Air is definitely not helping. While you have a fast download speed that old device can only process the data so fast.
2. Are you sure you are actually getting the that 500 Mbps speed? You can check it at sites like www.speedtest.net
3. Is the Macbook Air running any other programs while you are doing the download? It is quite possible it is running a bunch of background processes (like system updates) that you are not aware of. That will also impact the speeds. Shutting down any other programs you can while running the download will help.
4. How old is the memory stick and what data transfer speed is it rated at?

Also if the Macbook Air has not been rebooted recently reboot it. That may help.

I downloaded the latest update about 2 weeks ago and it took much longer than previous downloads.

Thanks cpq100, the 500 Mbps download speed is real according to speedtest.net (my ISP says it should be around 700Mbps, but I don’t believe them on that, LOL). I have checked, there are no unexpected background processes running or other apps open on the Mac. I think you’re right, it’s time I get a new laptop and a new memory stick!

Still downloading at the moment, it’s been 3 days now! I can download a whole HD film on Netflix to my smart TV in a matter of seconds, but downloading a map for my F-Type takes days, LOL!

Hmmm, the last one I downloaded 6 months ago took 24 hours, which I thought was excessive, but this one has been going 3 days and it’s still not finished!

I think it’s time to get a new laptop and USB stick.

Also I only want UK map at the moment, I don’t need Europe yet, and DEFINITELY not the whole of Russia! But there’s no way of choosing. :-/

My VW Polo conservative daily drive to work car does its own map updates automatically over its own mobile internet connection in the background whilst it’s being driven. Why Jag can’t do that is beyond me, it would be so much more convenient!

There could also be some issues on JLR's/HERE's side. That does sound excessive anyhow. Every time I downloaded those map updates in the past it took a few hours which also was really slow and clearly because of limited network capacity on JLR's/HERE's side. I'd try downloading on another device.

Once my HERE subscription ran out I didn't prolong it and stopped with those updates because it's all rather rubbish. The pricing is ridiculous and apart from having offline maps in the car as a backup HERE's map subscription add zero value compared to all other free options. Their live traffic data is clearly worse than other free sources and as mentioned, for most of us most of the data like Russian maps is useless.

Yeah I agree MajorTom, when the subscription expires I don’t think I’ll be bothering to renew it and will just use Waze via Apple CarPlay, which I’ll actually just probably do from now anyway because as you say, live traffic etc is better (and you get live police “safety” warnings from other users!)

Takes about 2 hours to download for me, did it 2 days ago. Their network is slow I think, not mine, I’m on 1Gig internet.

Fully agree with the frustration here. Had an Evoque until last year and map downloads were slow and cumbersome and I simply stopped bothering once the subscription ended.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Other manufactures seem capable of doing it either ota direct with WiFi or about an hour process for 32gb of download to laptop, move to a usb and then insert into car and sorts it out when next driven. 4 times per year and seemless (BMW)

I think my F type is on a 5 year old map but very little changes and theirs always Google :)
