If the hazard switch light goes out, the car is shutting down properly, so no need for a battery reset. I'd be inclined to give the battery an overnight charge and take things from there - I'm not convinced that driving the car can ever fully charge the battery.
Your suggestion to disconnect the battery for a few minutes fixed it.
