Hi all, I have a ‘21 F Type R that I got about 4 months ago. It is CPO so was serviced before I got it. I have driven about 9k miles (yes I love driving) and this past Saturday I checked my oil level and it said underfilled. Took it to the dealer and they added 1qt, still says underfilled but sometimes when I check, the bar is full (overfilled), and I watch it drop to half, low, and back to underfilled within like 5 seconds. I added 1 more qt today and same thing, the bar dropped back down to underfilled. I’m fairly positive I’m not leaking oil, but I just don’t know how to gauge how much oil is in my car. Service appointment next week but just thought I’d take to the forums to see if anyone has had a similar experience.

2 qt’s is a lot of top up oil. Suggest you make sure car is on a level surface and check first when cold ( before start up) if it’s showing under fill then just run, let cool and settle for 10 mins and check again. It may be that the oil sensor is gummed up and or failing. Wouldn’t suggest you add any further oil let the dealer drain, check the sensor and refill to spec.

overfill can be worse than under, at least you would get a red light if realy out of oil, overfill puts to much pressure on other thing take care

As MikeM says, it's vital that the car is on absolutely level ground to get an accurate reading. I've found that a very slight downward incline can give an overfilled reading, while I know it's perfect.

If there was a fault with the engine oil level monitor system you should see a warning message alongside the oil level display in the instrument panel.

To get a correct oil level reading the engine oil must reach its normal working temperature (hot) and the vehicle must be on level ground. Then, switch the engine off for 10 minutes and check (the system does not give an accurate reading until the oil level has stabilised).

Note: With regards to the sensitivity of the F-Type electronic dipstick, this information is taken from TOPIx.....

“In order to have a correct reading, the following conditions must be met:”

“The vehicle MUST be parked on a level area of ground. The sensor installation is very sensitive to vehicle tilt in the for-aft direction: ½ degree vehicle tilt corresponds to up to 0.5L measurement error.”

Two things you definitely don’t want to see is the ‘Overfilled’ or ‘Critically Low’ message in which case you shouldn’t drive the car until you get it sorted. If the oil just needed topping up it would be shown by the engine oil level indicator messages in the instrument panel. However, I top mine up with approx 250ml if it drops from the full position even though it says the oil level is ok. This is because the oil level monitor system allows for a certain drop in oil before it flags up.

Hi all, thanks for your replies! I just thought I’d come back to say it was a faulty oil level sensor. Jaguar replaced it and all is well now :)
