Help - howling/ oscillation noise

Hi all,

Does anyone recognise the noise below? I'd describe it as a faint oscillating/ undulating noise. Dealer has looked once (not very hard evidently) and failed to diagnose.

Most evident at low speeds (otherwise drowned out by road/engine noise)
Happens in gear (forward or reverse) or neutral and seems to increase with engine revs (though quickly drowned out).
It's on a 2023 P575 with around 15,000 miles.

I’m no motor mechanic so the following is only a guess on what I think it might be:
My 2021 P575, 25k miles, doesn’t make that sound.
I wonder could it be a squeaky belt (eg supercharger belt)? That’s what would be my first guess as a car enthusiast with no engineering training or experience.
Do reply to this post to let me know what it turns out to be once you have managed to get it diagnosed (in case mine ever starts doing it!!)
Maybe try a Jag specialist independent garage rather than dealership?? I previously owned an Audi S3 and my local independent VAG specialist garage were way better than the dealership; they actually really care for their customers and their cars, and are a fair bit cheaper too!

It's not easy to hear on the video clips, but it does sound like the tumble drier noise that I've experienced on both my F-types occasionally.

I had it a couple of weeks ago on getting home from Simply Jaguar at Beaulieu. I think it usually happens when the ambient air temperature is high (probably why I've not heard it for ages). I used to get it on my V6 occasionally, probably when it had been parked in the sun all day at work, when I think about it.

I've not idea what causes it, I just assumed it was related to the cooling or Aircon. Seemingly just a characteristic of the car, as hasn't cause any issue or changed during my ownership.

@DOC IW - I am thinking similar, though dealer claims to have checked all belts etc. I am more concerned as I never heard it on other F-types. Initially thought it could be diff (and was going to change oil) but that just doesn't stack up (sounds same in neutral). Am now worried it is something rotating with engine, will continue to investigate as it's not 'normal'.

@mickjaguar - this is encouraging, tumble drier noise is a good description (easier to hear on video with PC speakers etc than a phone). Don't suppose you have any videos or your noise for comparison? I don't tend to use fan or A/C, but will experiment next time I'm in it as it could be coolant pump or A/C compressor related (I guess both are belt driven).

Unfortunately not. I remember the noise from my V6, probably because it was my daily driver and I got stuck idling in traffic more often then. I owned that car from new and I think it was there occasionally every summer.

I've not really been aware of it much in my current car, other than a couple of weeks ago when I left the engine idling whilst opening my garage door. My tumble driers have been most noticeable when at a standstill and not drive train related.

I'll listen out for it this weekend, as I'll be in the car quite a bit. Although, the forecast is for only 19 degrees and I reckon this has usually been warm weather related.

My first impression was that yours does sound like the same noise and probably not an issue, unless it's there all of the time rather than occasionally.

Good news for you! Now that I’ve listened to your videos of the sound that you’re concerned about, I have noticed that mine does the “tumble dryer” sound at low revs too! I’m pretty sure it’s just a characteristic of the car; I think you’re hearing the supercharger working at low revs on your lovely 5.0 V8. I’d be inclined to say don’t worry and enjoy the car, particularly as you have had it checked over at a Jag garage. Send it!!

Mine too! I hadn’t actually noticed it until I came across this question on the forum. I think we’re hearing the supercharger doing its thing at low revs, so therefore it’s a glorious sound! LOL

Drove half mile up the road (23 degrees outside) to fill up with petrol today ready for the trip to Sherborne and the tumble dryer was doing its thing. Entirely normal, whatever it is. Never resulted in a problem during the last 8 years and two F types.
