Hi Guys,

I wanted to get a CTek MXS 5.0 Charger as I will not be using my F-Type that frequently.

I have read somewhere that the F-Type has some sort of battery condition monitor. Does anyone know how that works, I presume it monitors how the battery discharges and raises some kind of error code if it looks like the battery is performing badly. The thing I read (which I can't remember where) sort of insinuated if you changed a battery you would need to reset the cars battery monitor.

Reason I am mentioning is I am worried how this might be affected if you put a Ctek on the car, I know a lot of people use the Ctek's but I just wondered how the cars monitor works so I could fully understand any implications.

Probably worrying too much.

Cheers
Iain

Hi Iain.

Attached is the documents regarding the CTek charging connection point and also some information regarding the BMS system. (Battery Monitoring System)
The CTek is connected to the cars electrical spine so when you put it on trickle charge the car knows it.
Since i live in Sweden my car sits on a CTek CS One (Used to be the MXS-5) throughout the winter and i had no issues at all.

Hope it helps.

Interesting topic, I used to use CTEK all the time (I have a lot of machines) but have stopped using them as I found within a few years (averaging around 6-7) they just gave up the ghost. I have switched to use Noco pieces of kit and I prefer them.

Thanks for the info though how how best to consider charging and the BMS.

So long as you don't connect the charger straight on the battery terminals, all the current flows through the BMS so it's fully aware of the state of charge. The Jaguar procedure on battery change (not charge!) is to do a BMS reset, but I've read plenty of posts from people who haven't done the reset and have experienced no issues.

Interesting comment re your CTEK experience. I have four, with the youngest now seven years and the oldest fourteen. No failures yet and one sits outside all year round. Do though have a Noco GB40, only ever needed to use it with other people’s cars and it is a well made bit of kit.

I counted them last night, I have well into double figures!
Don't be convinced by the display on the CTEK, over the last couple of years I have had 4 look like all was well yet when I went to start the machine the battery was dead. For my lesser important machines I now use a cheapy of Amazon (£20 worth) and they are doing great.

I have used CTEK MSX 5 battery conditioners on my F-Type for 7 years now, the first one would occasionally come up with a fault, and eventually would not switch modes I.e. when you wanted to do a regen of the battery. The current one when left on over winter the car gave a low battery warning when started so not sure that is working 100% correctly.
