F-Type V6S AWD Rear Differential

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a 2015 F-Type V6S AWD, and within just a few days of ownership, I noticed a noise coming from the rear.

After some investigation, I believe the noise is coming from the rear differential. I changed the diff oil, which was black and quite thick—likely the original oil, as the car has only done 33k miles. Unfortunately, the noise hasn’t improved. It’s a whining sound while driving and also makes mechanical or clunky noises when reversing or manoeuvring in car parks.

Thankfully, I bought the car from a trader who has agreed to fix the issue at no cost.

However, I’m concerned about the variety of differentials available for this model. Is there a risk they might cut corners and install the open differential from the base V6? Would that even fit my car?

From my research, I believe the correct part number is T2R4000. If the open differential can be fitted to my car, how can I verify that the trader has installed the correct one?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Reidy,

that's the part number alright. Wasn't aware of different variations tbh. Had mine replaced at 43k. Cost on invoice back in 2022, (covered by a warranty) was £1900 plus £300 labour. If there are other variants would they be cheaper? ? Don't know..

From my experience with LSD diffs and the what you wrote about the oil was black and thick. Was there any signs of any metal or silvering in the oil? If not I would run the car for about 100m miles and re-change the diff oil again with the correct grade of oil and see if helps the situation. What is the service history like on the car with regards to the diff servicing? I would also check the AWD drive shaft fixings in case they are loose. If the garage is prepared to replace the rear diff unit make sure they replace with the correct one.

As far as I know there are 3 different variants of the differential:

1. Base V6 has a standard open diff
2. V6 S has a mechanical LSD
3. R has a electronic LSD

No danger of the traders mechanic putting the 3rd option into the car but I would assume that an open differential is cheaper than the mechanical LSD found in the V6 S.

Interesting - the mechanic has told me that the oil had no silvering or metal fragments but did say to not drive the car in case the Differential was to fail altogether. From the online service history I cannot see that the differential has ever had its oil change nor has any work been done on it. The Transfer case has had a fluid change at 30k miles (2024).

I hadn't considered the AWD drive shaft fittings - if they were loose could they cause a whining & mechanical clunking type noise from the rear end, even at low speeds? Sounds like the source is central in the car, underneath the boot floor.

The reason I suspected differential is I know that quite a few F-Types have had issues with the rear differential.

I believe the open and mech diffs have very slightly different ratios too.

mine went at about 30k miles was horrifically noisy, sadly no warranty - but had an amazing and quick diff rebuilt from a company in Sheffield that i would recommend if you need it

What's the name of the company in Sheffield and approx cost, if you don't mind me asking? My diff's getting noisy and a rebuild seems a much more economic option than a JLR replacement (no warranty).

Interestingly the mechanic has called Jaguar and they have quoted the part number T2R81338. They are struggling to find any parts that relate to that part number.

From my research online I believed that the correct part number was T2R4000. Is it possible that this part has been updated / replaced with the number quoted by jaguar?
