I just thought I'd jump on as quite a bit of discussion around post display order.

By default, its oldest post first and you scroll through the posts until you reach the latest post.
From that point forward, the forum knows you've read all the posts and you can either return to the start by clicking on the message title again, or click the little arrow next to it to be taken to the latest unread post. This means if you've been away for a few days and there has been 4 new posts, you'll be taken to the first of those. You will also see a link at the top of the topic to take you to the first unread post.

Now for those that like things a little differently and would prefer to see the newest posts first, you can set this as a default in your user control panel.
Visit User Control Panel, Board Preferences and then set your display preferences there.
