I thought churches were built on high land so they stood out.

But anyway, that Derby piece of land has always flooded however the level reached in October was the highest ever recorded.

Nice thought but not really true, that old churches don’t flood. Whilst many churches are on hills, many are not and a quick google shows many recently flooded including my wife’s former 14th century village church, flooded from the Derwent.
I do fully agree that building on flood planes over the last 50 years is not proving sensible and all the up stream flood barriers and defences just send the water faster to the next town..

In the case of Inchcape they knowingly built on land fully expected to flood and on a regular basis. That was crazy..
Yes, you’re right. I think Tewksbury seems to disprove that. 👍
But, we still don’t seem to be able to reconcile that saturated land and an elevated water table means trouble after rains. Flood plains just happened to be nature’s way of addressing cyclical water volumes running from the hinterland to the sea.

Looks like Inchape have left the building?
Here’s an announcement, made by G1 today:

HOUSTON, Aug. 1, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Group 1 Automotive, Inc. (NYSE: GPI) ("Group 1" or the "Company"), a Fortune 250 automotive retailer with 260 dealerships located in the U.S. and U.K., today announced that the Company has closed on the acquisition of Inchcape Retail ("IR") automotive operations with 54 dealership locations across the U.K. These dealerships are expected to generate $2.7 billion in annual revenues bringing 2024 year-to-date total acquired revenues for Group 1 to $3.8 billion.

"This transformative acquisition effectively doubles our U.K. footprint, giving us access to new markets throughout England with a collection of outstanding brands," said Group 1's President and Chief Executive Officer Daryl Kenningham. "We are delighted to welcome our new team members as we collaborate to deliver an excellent customer experience."

With the acquisition of IR's 54 dealerships, Group 1 has expanded its footprint to key hubs such as the Midlands, the North West of England and Wales, enabling the Company to reach new customers, as well as expand its brand offering in the U.K. The extensive brand portfolio includes Audi, BMW/MINI, Jaguar Land Rover, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz/smart, Porsche, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

Group 1's Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Daniel McHenry added, "Inchcape Retail and its team bring a 50-year reputation to Group 1's U.K. presence. I got the same flyer this morning. The deal was actually struck in April for c£346m, but draw your own conclusions about the negative impact of a virtually destroyed dealership on wider group finances.

Not convinced this benefits customers much by being integrated into a global entity which in the UK spans JLR, BMW, Mini, Ford, Audi, Merc. Skoda, Seat, Toyota, Kia and more..

Derby Dealership phoned me a couple of weeks ago wanting to do my service - they got an ear full after last years fiasco. Quoting service to schedule and then charging extra for items that should be on the schedule.

So no thanks - booked in at Stockport although its only a small service this time (Next year the big one)
