Speaker upgrades
Hello, I’m also planning the same upgrade from std ie non Meridian system.
Some websites suggest you can only go to premium 2ohm sub from standard rather than full super premium 4ohm sub.
Suggesting need updated amp.
I’d have thought this would be fine as higher impedance (less load) so only problem would be less overall power.
Has anyone who has upgrade has any problems with overall sound levels?

See my post earlier in this thread. I've gone from standard system to Super Premium speakers. Well worth doing.

Just done mine at the weekend too.
Managed to get tweeters and mids on eBay.
But using the standard bass units.
Dodo matted as per the video.
Def an improvement to rattles and panel vibration but bass is still not great - guess it must be the rubbish original bass driver.
Not as stark a difference as hoped.
Did have a question as you don’t see the bad units very often:
Do Jaguar use the same bass units in the 2010-2018 Jaguar XJ XJL X351 Rear Deck Parcel Shelf ?
May be a cheaper way of getting a couple…

Still not happy with the sound with just upgrading the mid and tweeter.
Far too much mid bass…
So I’ve decided to go the slightly scientific route and tweak the design using a calibration mic.
This was the result:
My guess is that upgraded parts are less sensitive as higher impedance. Have heard that too much mass loading on door cards can lower the resonance that is then energised by the bass speaker.
Will do a run with original parts and then may pull some of the deadening…

I did the same as you, picked up mids & tweeters from eBay & sound deadened the doors & door cards. Waited for ages hoping for the larger bass speakers to come up, without success so eventually bought new ones from Britcar, https://britcar.com/product.php/387645/ ... ue___sport
This last step is definitely worth doing. Having fitted these, I'm now happy with the sound.

Bear in mind that with new speakers, depending on the cone materials, they can take a while to “limber up” and perform at their best.
I had to replace a driver in my home (Totem Acoustic Hawk) speakers and the recommendation is up to 80 hours

So put original speakers back in and retested
Definitely more balanced. So I’d say that you have to put all three upgraded speakers in for a balanced improvement.
Shame as mid and treble much better so will have to look out for the marching bass units

You could also get some sound absorbing wadding into the door cavity, that should bring slightly more detail into the music. When you eventually get the door woofers and complete the door conversion, do try the fader mostly forward and on stereo setting (if you have surround).
I'd be interested in more detail on the calibration mike and how to use it in the car.

Thought I’d have a go at improving suck out in bass and had an idea might be back reflections of the door skin so folded up some dodo mat then added some material cable tape…I think it’s better
Next is to stop the big plastic door panel peaks and troughs. I don’t think thin mat is the answer so will order some silent coat sound absorber foam to go in the gap between the door card and door panel.
Using a swept sine wave rather than pink noise and FFT function. Really interesting how you can hear the peaks and troughs…
Will post when I make any more improvements
