Stumbled upon this video and found it rather interesting. It's a lot more complicated than I thought, but does explain the second battery in the early models, and the technology that enabled it to be removed subsequently.

But if only Jag had spent the development money on the KERS battery instead and given us that push to pass button on the steering wheel, that they had on the C-X16
